twenty-nine

Today is my 29th Birthday. Alvaro & I will spend it together. A long breakfast. A trip to the coffeeshop & likely tacos at my favorite place followed by a movie. A few of my favorite things, with my favorite person. The best kind of day!

I’m excited to make my 29th year, a great one. I have a lot of big things planned. I better go get started!

Recent Read // Salmon, People, and Place

When I finished up my last book I asked Al what i should read next. He suggested I read book he just picked up but hasn’t had a chance to read yet, Salmon, People, and Place: A Biologist's Search for Salmon Recovery by Jim Lichatowich.

Alvaro is studying marine biology at OSU and has a passion for the protection, restoration, and recovery of salmon. So I was excited to read the book and gain a better understanding of the history of salmon in the PNW. I love supporting him in his passion and having a better understanding of salmon will help in our many discussions.

Background // Jim is a biologist that worked for over 40 years with the ODFW and with various advisory panels throughout Oregon, California, and British Columbia. He has a wealth of knowledge and lots of personal experiences on the difficulties facing the recovery of the salmon.

Review // I really enjoyed this read. It really opened my eyes to how salmon is viewed by citizens in the PNW and how political it all is. At times I felt discouraged and saddened by the way it seemed the salmon are viewed. As a money making commodity. However in the final chapter he highlights and discusses how he thinks the salmon can be restored to their original runs. The changes that need to take place to ensure they are here for many generations to come. Many of his suggested changes don’t seem too far fetched or impossible. I’m excited to see what changes Al & others in his field are able to make.

Quotes // Below are some quotes that especially stood out to me:

“The Pacific Northwest is simply this: wherever the salmon can get to.” - Timothy Egan

“... history matters. It’s not just the long, evolutionary history that matters, but also the shorter-term history of our relationship to the place where we live and hate animals we share that place with”

“Whatever your belief about creation and the origins of life on Earth, that belief, unless it is completely overridden by the single-minded pursuit of profit, should include respect for nature’s gifts and a sense of wonder at the diversity of life that blankets our planet. Whatever drives your relationship with the natural world - whether you cut trees or build houses out of the wood, irrigate a farm or cook the food it produces, whether you push barges up a river or catch salmon, whether you convert sawdust to paper or use paper to write books - you are surrounded and sustained by nature’s gifts. The annual return of the salmon to the rivers of the Pacific Northwest is one of those gifts.”

“Our stories determine whether we will coevolve a sustainable relationship with natural resources such as salmon or whether we will destroy relationships and extirpate those resources. In that regard, it is important to remember that we don’t just tell stories -- stories about rivers and harnessing their power and stories about salmon factories. We tell these stories; but these stores also tell us. Stories dig deep and reveal the beliefs, assumptions, and myths that determine how we comprehend and interact with the world around us. If we pay attention to and approach our stories with an open mind, they will tell us important things about ourselves, things that are buried so deep inside us that they remain hidden...”

Thankful

via
I always feel like i have so much to be thankful for, but this year it seems like even more. I’m so thankful for my family & the support that they’ve been for Alvaro & I. I’m grateful for a job I love that allows Al to go to school full time. I’m thankful for our health & both our families health. I’m thankful for an apartment we’re making cozy, into our home. I’m thankful for my husband. How incredibly supportive he is & the amazing relationship we have. No way we could be changing our lives & futures without each other. I love him & appreciate him so much.

I hope your thankful list is long & full.

Alvaro's Birthday

Last monday, November 3rd, was Alvaro’s birthday. Between a Biology midterm on Monday & Al getting rear ended on Tuesday :( the week didn’t feel very celebratory.  However when Al came to pick me up Friday from work, I had a plan in the making. Dinner & shopping in Bridgeport. Honestly, it didn’t take much to convince Al to go along with my idea. After a quick stop on the house we were heading to Bridgeport Village.

After we got our name on the list for PF Chang's we went over to the Apple Store to do a little shopping. Alvaro had been doing some research on an iPad and really wanted to get one to help with his studies and take to class. We walked out with a brand new iPad Air 2 for him! So excited for him. The iPad we had before that was the first version they came out with! It was over twice the weight of the new one which we could no longer update since Apple is no longer supporting that operating system, ha.

We ran over to PF Chang’s and had a wonderful dinner together. I think the best part was that neither of us took out our phones or even thought about them (no photos). We just really enjoyed each other. I have a bad habit of being anxious and always trying to stick to a schedule, but I didn’t even think about it. I just wanted to celebrate my husband & his birthday. I love him so much. I think even though it was simple, it’ll be a birthday we’ll always remember.

Exploring :: Minto Brown Park

Today Alvaro & I explored Minto Brown Park looking for some samples for his biology class. We had to hurry towards the end cause a huge wind storm was coming in. We even saw some branches break off trees across the park! Luckily Al snapped some great pictures of our adventure. I love living in the Pacific Northwest!

Day with Alvaro at OSU

Last week I went with Alvaro to OSU for the day. It was really fun to spend the day together & get to see the campus. It’s so big compared to where I went to college. And the classes are held in auditoriums! Auditoriums with like 300 students. Totally nuts! I explored campus & the library while he was in class. We had lunch & I went with him to his Biology class. In an auditorium.

On the way home we stopped at Hobby Lobby in Albany. It was the first time I’ve been there. So many cute & trendy items! Can’t wait to go back with a little spending money :)

Marriage is my favorite

Being married truly is my very favorite thing. I love getting to spend my life & days with my very favorite person. Every day I can’t wait to go home & spend time with Alvaro.

A friend of my got married last weekend & I couldn’t have been more excited for her. I congratulated them on Facebook & told her that marriage is my favorite thing. There is something so special about being married & sharing a life with someone.

Alvaro & I dated for about 7 years before we got married. But when we got married it changed things. Brought us closer and we really truly became a team, a family. We both know that no matter what happens, we’re in this together. I’ve got his back & he’s got mine. There is such a comfort & a security that comes with that.

My mom has always told us stories about how fun it was when her & my dad first got married. How it felt like playing house and they would laugh and laugh for hours together. I can’t wait to share those stories with our kids. No one can make me laugh like Alvaro.

The years my brother was sick were the hardest years of my life. I can’t imagine going through them without Alvaro. And when the bad days & moments come, he’s there for me. He remembers the pain & is the most supportive husband. I can’t believe I got so lucky with him. Being married to him really is my favorite thing.

A Diagnosis

About two weeks ago Alvaro & I walked into my doctor’s office hand in hand. We waited for nearly an hour to meet with the doctor. Once she came in we reviewed the test results. I was pretty certain what the test would be, but will still surprised. We talked for some time about the best way to move forward and treat this. After the diagnosis (& a few tears) Alvaro and I walked out hand in hand.

This diagnosis isn’t a life stopper, but I would label it is a life alterer. We’ll have to alter our eating and exercise. The doctor suggested a very clean, paleo style eating plan. Avoiding things that are known to cause inflammation. Basically no sugar, gluten, or dairy. Lots of organic fruits & vegetables, lean meats, and proteins. Sticking to a strict exercise plan is also very important as she’d like me to lose a little of the weight I’ve gained over the last 2 years (newlywed weight gain). We wouldn’t say we ate terrible before, but enjoyed ice cream & pasta whenever we wanted and often had sandwiches for lunch.

Well nearly two weeks in and it’s been going good and bad. The first week I felt great. It wasn’t so hard to give up my favorite treats knowing that their was something bigger on the line here. Alvaro & I both felt like we had more energy and weren’t crashing at 5pm everyday due to our my 3pm sugar snack. We also felt like we were sleeping better and deeper. This last week was a little tougher. I felt exhausted. Cooking every meal & making sure lunch was packed the night before was tiring. Alvaro worked late nearly every night so he wasn’t able to help as much as usual. I felt like week 1 the whole, organic food we were eating was fueling me. This week I felt like I was detoxing all the crap I’d been consuming before. It was tough. I fell asleep on the couch nearly every night. I should have been more in tune with what my body needed. And to top it all off Friday afternoon I tried to make a good snack decision and ate a package of peanuts. Big mistake! I’m guessing maybe I ate it too fast or it was too much fat and I was sick almost the rest of the day & night. I felt terrible. Lesson learned, no snacks. I’ll be sticking to my fruits and vegetables and wait till I get home to have more if I’m still hungry.

Through all of this Alvaro has been my saving grace. Promising to eat, exercise, and do whatever I’m doing to improve my condition. How I was lucky enough to marry the most understanding, flexible, caring, and selfless person, is a mystery to me. I love him & am so grateful for him. He’s told me so many times, we’re a team. These last 2 weeks have really brought us even closer.

We’re still getting a handle on our grocery budget & learning where to buy everything. This is one of the hardest things for me. Grocery shopping isn’t my favorite. I usually like to go at 7am on Saturday or Sunday and (proudly) finish my shopping in less than an hour. That’s no longer an option. We now are comparing prices and shopping multiple stores. Learning who has what and what we can afford. It’s a lot of work, lol! #firstworldproblems

So we’re learning. Reading a lot of books (hello Powell’s & the public library!), lots of research, recipe reading, and blog following. Overwhelming and encouraging. If you have a favorite paleo style blog, cookbook, or recipe, please share in the comments! I hope to document my progress and journey on this new path and hopefully offer support and info to others making changes to their diet and lifestyle for health reasons.

Thanks for reading! I’m off to find some goodies for dinner from the farmers market!

Spoiled Saturday

Alvaro and I don't get many weekends off together. So whenever we do I try to spend lots of time with him and do something fun. Yesterday we both had the day off and we totally took advantage of it!

We started the day by watching this little cutie play basketball. She's on a kindergarten (5 year olds) team, the Rhinos. It's seriously the cutest thing I've ever seen! Little kids running up and down the court, doing the best they can. She's adorable and a great little trooper. I love watching her run around with a big smile on her face. She'll even look over and give us a thumbs up with a wink. I die! I'm so proud of her.

Then we were off to Portland to get my ring repaired. I messed it up pretty bad a couple weeks ago moving furniture and I've been so sad to have to leave it at home. It'll be ready on Wednesday and I can't wait.

Then we headed out to do some shopping. I needed some new clothes and Alvaro needed some new fishing stuff. I love all the stuff at the fishing store. They had the most adorable little fishing vest. Totally getting that for our future little one :)

My husband is truly the best. Spoiling me with coffees, lunch, and even walking around the store with me and picking out clothes. I don't think many guys out there would be willing to do that.
I sure do love that guy!

How was your weekend? Did you spend it doing anything fun?
